MAKE IT MONDAY - Find the kickoff story video for this week's engineering challenge HERE. The Story is I Am Not A Chair. {Thank you to HarperCollins for allowing me to read aloud to my students during COVID-19 Stay Home.}
This week we are going to focus on the structure and design of a chair! Watch the Make it Monday Video HERE - In this video we will discuss the structure and design of chairs, and the different purposes. Your challenge for this week is to design and build your own chair using only the following materials:
Paper (notebook paper, newspaper, construction paper, junk mail paper, etc.)
Cardboard - any kind
Tape
1. Create a plan for what you want your chair to look like.
Who will your chair be for? How much weight will it need to hold? How tall would you like to make your chair? What limitations do you have considering the materials you have to work with?
2. Make sure you talk to an adult about your plan, let them know if you will need any help with cutting cardboard.
3. Build your chair from paper, cardboard and tape. {Hint: You might want to watch the Watch It Wednesday video from last week if you haven't already to learn some unique ways to work with cardboard!} Feel free to make your chair beautiful with colors and design! YOU are the consumer - is this a chair you would want to buy?
4. {optional, but I can't wait to see your IDEAS!} PRESENT YOUR WORK: Open the Google Slide for your grade below and edit the NEXT slide. Insert a picture of your creation, as well as your name and teacher name. If you are collaborating with a family member, be sure to share it in both grade level slide!

TALK ABOUT IT TUESDAY - Think about some things as a family that you have at home because of their design (because you think they look cool), and some things you have at home because of their function (because you need them to live comfortable). When have you ever purchased something because you needed it's function more than you needed it to look cool? Do you think engineers need to think about how things look when they are designing new inventions?
WATCH IT WEDNESDAY - Check out this video of fun science demonstrations: HERE This week we are going to be showing you how to make 4 different homemade bubble solutions. We will also show you how to make your own bubble wands, including things you can find around the house. You will see how to make a 3 dimensional bubble wand so that you can test tensile bubbles. The video begins with a fun bubble tower activity that you can do with water, one drop of dish soap, and a straw. How tall can you make your tower?
THINK ABOUT IT THURSDAY-
If the recipe for bubbles is the following:
3 cups water
1 cup dish soap
1/2 cup of light corn syrup
What would the recipe be if I wanted to cut the recipe in half?
What would the recipe be if I wanted to make twice as much?
SUPER CHALLENGE: What would the recipe be if I wanted to fill an Olympic swimming pool? :)
FIND IT FRIDAY - This week I want you to go on a scavenger hunt inside your home. Collect as many things as you can find that you could use as a homemade bubble wand. {You might have to watch the Watch it Wednesday video in order to find some inspiration - lots of items might come from your kitchen.}
